Random Items relating to dlna e.t.c
As I have not been able to find any useful help elsewhere on the web – I thought I would add my findings.
For a while I have been running a couple of squeezebox receivers off my main PC (Vista) running the logitech squeeze center software. This has all gone well, and my boxes and boxes of CDs now reside in the loft, leaving some space for more necessary items.
Recently Logitech renames the server software to ‘Logitech Media centre’ as they have apparently added support for video streaming as well as support for the DLNA standard.
About the same time, by DVD player packed in, and a replacement I had knocking around has been temperamental. It seemed a bit unnecessary buying a DVD player in late 2011, and I’m not interested in blue-ray (my analogue TV makes that silly) so I thought I would bite the bullet and move all the DVD collection onto the media server and stream it instead of .
After some (limited) research, I ordered a Sony SMP-N200 media player – as this looked like the easiest way of getting DLNA compatible video streaming from a small silence box with built in wi-fi, and analogue TV outputs (most media streamer understandable go straight for HDMI output, and don’t offer support for older TVs.)
I quickly got the Sony box hooked up to my TV through a composite analogue connection, and connecting to the internet (BBC iPlayer etc) wirelessly through my minimal router modem (Thomson Speedtouch )
I then tried to get streaming from my network going, and ran into problems.
Network Streaming
By default, the Sony spotted a Buffalo Link station live (HS-DHGL series Firmware 2.10) as a dlna device .. but could not find any playable media on it.
The HS-DHGL is notionally ‘Built-in DLNA CERTIFIEDâ„¢ server for easy playback of multimedia files to any DLNA CERTIFIED device’ accoding to, http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Category:LSLive, and I leave this device on most of the timer, and would be OK with it as the main video server if I can’t get logitech media player to work.
The admin pages of the linkstation show no mention of ‘DLNA’ nor does the manual more worryingly.
Some more googling found someone who claimed to have some success streaming from a linkstation HS-DH500GL to PS/3 (which is pretty much the same as a SMP-n200) using Firmware 2.11
The buffalo site shows that there is a version 2.11 firmware release .. but it is beta, and dates from Jan 2009, so clearly Buffalo are not going to release any further updates.
I’ll try and flash this into a spare linkstation, and see what happens.
